Used Car Test Drive Checklist (Do It Cold)

Updated September 2026 · 4 min read

A five-minute loop around the block hides most problems. A proper used-car test drive takes 20-30 minutes, starts with a cold engine, and includes a highway stretch. The owner should let you do it - if they will not, that is information.

Before you start

During the drive

Test every feature

Air conditioning and heat, all windows, the radio, every USB port, the camera, the seats, the lights and the warning lamps. Check for a check-engine light that has been cleared - ask when it was last reset.

After the drive

Let the car idle and check for leaks again. Ask for service records, and run a vehicle-history report for accidents and title brands. Then book a pre-purchase inspection before you commit - see the inspection guide, and price the car against the depreciation calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a cold start matter?

Some problems, like a failing starter or a rough idle, only show when the engine is cold. A warm car can mask them.

Can I take the car to my own mechanic?

Yes, and you should. A seller who refuses a reasonable inspection is a red flag.
