EV Charging Cost Calculator
Your real cost to charge, home vs public.
Cost per full charge
Cost per mile
Charging cost per year
How to use this calculator
Enter your EV's battery size and realistic range (your efficiency = range / battery), then your electricity rates and how much you charge at home.
What the result means
Home charging at ~15 cents per kWh is dramatically cheaper than public chargers at 40-50 cents. The per-mile figure is what you should compare against a gas car's fuel cost.
How charging cost is estimated
The tool converts your battery size and range into an efficiency figure (kWh per mile), then multiplies by your electricity rates. It blends home and public rates using the share you charge at home, because that split changes the total more than almost anything else.
Worked example
A 60 kWh battery with 250 miles of range uses about 0.24 kWh per mile. Charging 85% at home at $0.15 and 15% in public at $0.45 gives an average near $0.20/kWh. Over 12,000 miles that is roughly $570 a year - and a full charge costs about $11.
Why home charging share dominates
Public fast chargers can run 3x the home rate. Charging 100% at home at $0.15 can be half the cost of charging 100% in public at $0.45, which is why EV running costs vary so much between owners.
What this tool does not include
It ignores the cost of a home charger install, time-of-use rates, charging losses (~10%) and free workplace charging, which would only make an EV cheaper.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to charge at home?
A 60 kWh battery at $0.15/kWh costs about $9 for a full charge - often less than a third of a full gas tank.
Is my real range the EPA number?
Use a realistic figure - EPA minus 10-20% for highway speeds or cold weather.
Cut the bill further
If your utility offers time-of-use rates, schedule charging after 9-10 pm when power is cheapest. That can cut the home rate by a third or more. Combining off-peak home charging with a realistic range figure is the fastest way to push an EV's per-mile cost down to a third of a gas car's.
